It comes from the fact that American mulattos and mestizos adopted a dance called Fandango, a couple's turning dance that was danced with castanets.
With their unique style and rhythm, they transformed it into the zamacueca and exchanged castanets for a handkerchief.
The zamacueca is the mother of La Zamba, La Cueca and La Marinera
